Ways to Dominate Market
Product / Principles
Peter Thiel's Zero to One: monopoly comes from one of four moats.
The Four Moats
- Proprietary technology. 10x better than the alternative.
- Network effects. Each user makes the product more valuable.
- Economies of scale. Costs fall as you grow.
- Brand. The name itself is the moat.
Why It Matters
- Competitive markets squeeze margins to zero. Monopolies fund invention.
- Without a moat, you win a market and then lose it to the next competitor.
- Most startups don't have one. The ones that last do.
How to Apply
- Pick a small market you can dominate before expanding.
- Identify which moat you're building and invest there.
- If you can't name your moat, you don't have one.
The Trap
Believing you have all four. Most great companies have one, sometimes two. Pretending to have more diffuses your strategy.
