10x Rule
Product / Principles
To unseat the incumbent, be ten times better — not marginally better.
The Idea
People don't switch for small improvements. Switching costs are real: learning curves, migrations, habit, risk. A 20% better product usually loses. A 10x better product wins because the gap is bigger than the switching cost.
Why It Matters
- Markets have defaults. Defaults are sticky.
- "Me too, but slightly nicer" is the graveyard of products.
- 10x forces you to find the asymmetry, not incrementally polish.
How to Apply
- Pick one dimension where you can be radically better: speed, price, experience, scope.
- Test the 10x claim with real users before shipping.
- If you can't find a 10x axis, reconsider the market.
The Trap
Assuming 10x means 10x features. Often it means 10x simpler, 10x cheaper, or 10x faster — subtraction, not addition.
