Network Effects
Product / Concepts
A product that gets more valuable as more people use it.
What It Means
A phone is useless if no one else has one. WhatsApp is better the more contacts are on it. Marketplaces need buyers and sellers. When each user adds value for every other user, you have a network effect.
Types
- Direct — more users, more value (phones, chat).
- Two-sided — one group needs the other (Uber drivers and riders).
- Data — more users produce more data that improves the product (search, recommendations).
- Local — effects are strongest within a city, company, or friend group.
Why It Matters
- Network effects create defensibility. Competitors need to bootstrap from zero.
- Growth compounds once critical mass hits.
- They also create winner-take-all dynamics — second place is often dead.
The Cold Start
Before the network exists, the product has no value. Solve it with single-player utility, seed hand-picked users, or launch city-by-city.
