Transparency Test
Leadership / Tools
A simple test for whether you're being transparent enough.
The Test
Before making a decision or withholding information, ask:
"If everyone on the team could see everything I know right now, would I make the same decision?"
If yes, you're being transparent. If no, examine why.
When to Apply
- Before making a decision that affects others.
- When you're tempted to share information selectively.
- When you're about to give different messages to different people.
- When deciding what to include in a team update.
The Principle
Transparency is the default. Secrecy is the exception that requires justification.
Legitimate reasons to withhold:
- Personal/HR information.
- Legal requirements.
- Information that's genuinely not yet ready to share.
Illegitimate reasons:
- "They wouldn't understand."
- "It might cause worry."
- "It's easier this way."
