Context Over Control
Leadership / Dualities · Updated Apr 2026
Give people the why and let them figure out the how.
The Idea
Instead of controlling what people do, share enough context that they can make good decisions on their own.
- Control: "Build feature X using approach Y by Friday."
- Context: "Our users are churning because of problem Z. How should we solve this?"
Why Context Wins
- People closest to the problem often see the best solution.
- Autonomy drives motivation and ownership.
- You can't control everything as the team grows. Context scales; control doesn't.
How to Give Good Context
- Share the business goals, not just the task.
- Explain constraints and trade-offs openly.
- Make metrics and data visible to everyone.
- Tell people what success looks like, not the steps to get there.
When Control Is Needed
- Safety-critical situations.
- When someone is genuinely lost and needs direction.
- During a crisis with no time for exploration.
