Trust Is at the Core of Leadership
Leadership / Advice · Updated Apr 2026
Without trust, nothing else works.
Why Trust Is Foundational
- People won't follow someone they don't trust.
- Without trust, communication breaks down.
- Without trust, feedback is ignored.
- Without trust, delegation is impossible.
How Trust Is Built
- Consistency. Do what you say you'll do.
- Vulnerability. Admit mistakes and gaps.
- Competence. Know enough to make good decisions.
- Care. Show genuine interest in people's wellbeing and growth.
These four elements work together. Being competent but unreliable breaks trust. Being caring but incompetent breaks trust.
How Trust Is Destroyed
- Making promises and not keeping them.
- Taking credit for others' work.
- Saying different things to different people.
- Punishing honesty.
The Investment
Trust takes a long time to build and a moment to destroy. Treat it as the most important asset you have.
