Trust Over Control
Leadership / Dualities · Updated Apr 2026
Trust is the foundation. Control is the crutch.
Why Trust Wins
- Trusted teams move faster because they don't wait for permission.
- Trust attracts and retains strong people. Control drives them away.
- Trust scales. Control doesn't - you can only control so many people.
How to Build Trust
- Give autonomy and let people own the results.
- Be transparent about decisions and reasoning.
- Follow through on commitments.
- Admit mistakes openly.
- Assume good intent by default.
How Trust Breaks
- Saying one thing and doing another.
- Micromanaging after saying "I trust you."
- Taking credit for wins, blaming others for losses.
- Hidden agendas.
When Some Control Is Needed
Trust doesn't mean zero oversight. You still need:
- Clear expectations and goals.
- Regular check-ins (not check-ups).
- Feedback loops.
- Accountability for commitments.
