Telescope and Microscope
Leadership / Dualities
Working on the right level of abstraction.
Telescope (Zoom Out)
- See the big picture.
- Understand how parts connect.
- Spot patterns and trends.
- Ask: "Does this still make sense?"
Microscope (Zoom In)
- See the details.
- Understand how things actually work.
- Spot quality issues and edge cases.
- Ask: "Is this done well?"
The Skill
Great leaders switch between telescope and microscope fluidly. They know when to zoom in and when to zoom out.
Common failure modes:
- Always telescope: loses touch with reality, makes decisions based on wrong assumptions.
- Always microscope: misses the forest for the trees, micromanages.
How to Practice
- Start meetings zoomed out, then zoom in where needed.
- When you're deep in detail, periodically ask: "Does this still align with the bigger picture?"
- When you're planning high-level, ask: "What does this actually look like in practice?"
