Inside the Box (Operations)
- Day-to-day work within existing structures.
- Following processes, hitting targets, shipping features.
- "How do we do this better?"
Outside the Box (Governance)
- Stepping back to redesign the structures themselves.
- Changing processes, redefining goals, reorganising teams.
- "Should we be doing this at all?"
The Leadership Challenge
Most leaders spend too much time inside the box. It feels productive. The work is clear and measurable.
But the highest-leverage work is outside the box:
- Redesigning how the team works.
- Changing what gets measured.
- Redefining success.
How to Balance
- Block time for "outside the box" work. It won't happen by default.
- Ask regularly: "Am I solving problems inside a broken system, or fixing the system?"
- Delegate inside-the-box work so you can focus on the structure.
