Holistic Leadership
Leadership / Concepts
Leading the whole system, not just the parts you're directly responsible for.
What It Means
A holistic leader considers:
- People - skills, motivation, wellbeing, growth.
- Product - what you're building and why it matters.
- Process - how work flows through the team.
- Culture - the unwritten rules and norms.
- Business - revenue, customers, market.
Focusing on just one of these creates blind spots.
Why It Matters
- A team with great engineers but bad process will underdeliver.
- A team with great process but no purpose will lose people.
- A team with great culture but no business sense won't survive.
How to Practice It
- Regularly zoom out and ask: which dimension am I neglecting?
- Talk to people outside your immediate team.
- Use Telescope and Microscope thinking to switch between detail and big picture.
