Teach Through Assigning Actual Tasks
Leadership / Advice · Updated Apr 2026
People learn by doing, not by watching presentations.
The Idea
The best way to develop someone is to give them a real task that stretches them, then support them through it.
Why It Works
- Real stakes create real engagement.
- Learning is contextual - abstract training doesn't stick.
- Ownership builds confidence.
- Mistakes on real work are the most memorable teachers.
How to Do It Well
- Match the challenge to the person's growth edge.
- Provide enough support that failure isn't catastrophic.
- Let them struggle. Don't solve it for them.
- Debrief after. "What did you learn? What would you do differently?"
What to Avoid
- Assigning busywork and calling it a learning opportunity.
- Tasks that are too far above their level (sets them up for failure).
- Stepping in at the first sign of difficulty.
