Make People Responsible for Results
Leadership / Advice · Updated Apr 2026
Ownership drives quality. Shared responsibility means no responsibility.
The Idea
Give people clear ownership of outcomes, not just tasks. When someone owns a result, they care about the whole picture, not just their piece.
How to Do It
- Assign clear owners for every important outcome.
- Let them decide how to achieve it.
- Hold them accountable for the result, not the method.
- Make ownership visible to the whole team.
What to Avoid
- Assigning tasks without explaining the desired outcome.
- Multiple owners for the same thing.
- Stepping in and taking over when things get hard.
- Blaming people for results while controlling their methods.
The Balance
Responsibility without authority is unfair. If you make someone responsible, give them the power to act.
