Two legitimate paths — and conflating them ruins both.
A startup chases exponential growth, takes capital, and aims to dominate a market. A small business earns profit, serves a niche, and answers only to customers. Same tools, different games.
| Startup | Small Business |
|---|---|
| VC-funded | Bootstrapped or profit-funded |
| Growth over profit | Profit over growth |
| Winner-take-all market | Sustainable niche |
| Exit-oriented | Durability-oriented |
Calling yourself a startup because it sounds better. If you don't need exponential growth and don't want investors, you're running a business — and that's a strong place to be.
