Minimum Viable Audience
Product / Concepts
Don't try to reach everyone. Find the smallest audience that could sustain you.
What It Means
Seth Godin's idea: instead of chasing mass market, identify the smallest group of people you could delight. Build for them. They tell others.
Why It Matters
- A sharp offer for a small audience beats a vague offer for a huge one.
- Enthusiasts become your marketing channel.
- Starting narrow is easier, cheaper, and more learnable than starting broad.
How to Apply
- Describe your audience specifically enough that members recognise themselves.
- Ask: who would be heartbroken if this product disappeared?
- Build for them first. Expand later only if it doesn't dilute the core.
The Trap
Confusing "minimum viable" with "unambitious." It's not about staying small — it's about earning the right to grow by serving a small group brilliantly.
