Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Systems / Concepts
A prediction that causes itself to come true.
What It Means
Expecting something changes behaviour in ways that make it more likely. A bank thought insolvent has depositors withdrawing. A student labelled capable gets more attention and becomes capable. The prediction is the cause.
Why It Matters
- In social systems, beliefs shape reality.
- Confidence crises, bank runs, panic buying — all self-fulfilling.
- Stated expectations are interventions, not just descriptions.
How to Apply
- When you predict something publicly, you may be steering it.
- Use the effect deliberately: expressing belief in a team often improves their output.
- Watch for loops where fear creates the feared outcome.
The Opposite
Self-defeating prophecies: predictions that change behaviour so the prediction fails. Weather warnings that prevent the damage they warned of.
