Right-to-Left Thinking
Product / Tools
Start with the outcome. Work backwards to the steps.
The Technique
- Write the final outcome first, in concrete terms.
- Ask: what state must exist just before that outcome?
- Repeat — step by step backwards — until you reach today.
Why It Matters
- Forward planning accumulates activity; backward planning clarifies necessity.
- Starting from the outcome eliminates work that doesn't contribute.
- It makes scope visible: you see exactly what must be true, not what would be nice.
How to Apply
- Use for launches, migrations, hiring plans, product milestones.
- Write the press release, the dashboard state, or the user quote first.
- Then enumerate prerequisites.
Example
Amazon's working-backwards method: write the press release before writing the code. If the release isn't compelling, don't build.
The Trap
Backward planning can make uncertain outcomes look certain. The path is real; the outcome remains a hypothesis.
