Sequencing and Step by Step Unfolding
Product / Tools
Complex things grow in the right order, one step at a time.
The Idea
From Christopher Alexander: good wholes emerge through unfolding — each step preserves and strengthens what came before. Skip steps and the result feels assembled, not grown.
Why It Matters
- Order matters. Right thing, wrong time, is wrong.
- Skipping steps creates brittle, disjointed systems.
- Each step should make the next obvious.
How to Apply
- Ask: what must exist before this can be built?
- Sequence work so each stage enhances the last.
- Delay decisions until their context is clear.
- Resist parallel work on things that depend on each other.
Examples
- A city grows from a village, not from a master plan.
- A product finds its shape feature by feature, not feature-complete from day one.
- A codebase matures through iterations, not one-shot rewrites.
The Trap
Waiting for perfect sequence. Some parallelism is necessary. The skill is knowing which steps must be sequential and which can run side by side.
