Remote-First Is About Not Simulating Office Work
Leadership / Advice
Remote work done right is a different way of working, not office work over video.
The Mistake
Taking office patterns and forcing them into remote:
- 8 hours of video calls instead of 8 hours in person.
- Monitoring screen time instead of trusting output.
- Synchronous communication as the default.
- "Camera on" policies.
What Remote-First Actually Means
- Async by default. Communication doesn't require real-time presence.
- Written over verbal. Decisions are documented, not locked in someone's memory.
- Output over presence. Judge work by results, not hours online.
- Intentional synchronous time. When you do meet, make it count.
What Changes
- Documentation becomes essential, not optional.
- Meeting culture must be deliberately designed.
- Trust replaces surveillance.
- Time zones become a feature (follow-the-sun work), not a bug.
