Asynchronous Communication
Leadership / Concepts · Updated Apr 2026
Communication where participants don't need to be present at the same time.
Key Ideas
- Async is the default mode for distributed and remote teams.
- It forces clarity. You can't rely on tone or follow-up questions, so you write better.
- It respects people's time and focus. No one gets pulled out of deep work.
- It creates a written record that others can reference later.
How to Do It Well
- Write with enough context that the reader doesn't need to ask follow-up questions.
- State what you need and by when.
- Use structured formats: bullet points, headings, TL;DRs.
- Default to public channels over DMs so the whole team benefits.
When NOT to Use It
- Sensitive or emotional topics (use a call).
- Fast-moving incidents.
- When you've gone back and forth three times and still aren't aligned.
