Clarity of Purpose
Leadership / Principles
If people don't know why they're doing something, they'll do the wrong thing.
What It Means
Every team and individual should be able to answer:
- Why does this team exist?
- What are we trying to achieve?
- How does our work connect to the bigger picture?
If they can't, you have a clarity problem.
Why It Matters
- Unclear purpose leads to misaligned effort.
- People fill the void with their own assumptions.
- Without purpose, work becomes just tasks.
- Purpose drives motivation more than compensation.
How to Create Clarity
- State the purpose simply. If it takes a paragraph, it's too complex.
- Repeat it often. People forget. New people join.
- Connect daily work to the purpose explicitly.
- When priorities conflict, use purpose as the tiebreaker.
The Test
Ask five people on your team what the team's purpose is. If you get five different answers, you have work to do.
