Customer Experience Success Effort Emotion
Product / Principles
A good experience is judged on three things: did it work, how hard was it, and how did it feel?
The Three Dimensions
- Success. Did the user get what they came for?
- Effort. How much friction did it take? Clicks, thinking, waiting.
- Emotion. How did it feel along the way? Delight, frustration, confidence.
Why It Matters
- Most teams measure success only. Effort and emotion are equally predictive of retention.
- A product can succeed functionally and still drive users away because it felt awful.
- High effort kills repeat use even when the outcome was good.
How to Apply
- Instrument all three. Effort via task times and click counts. Emotion via NPS, interviews, and observation.
- Fix effort first — it's easiest to measure and most commonly broken.
- Emotion is won at the edges: onboarding, errors, recovery, waiting states.
The Trap
Treating emotion as decoration. Trust, confidence, and delight are not polish — they're the reason users stay.
