Content-Driven Products
Product / Concepts
Products whose value comes from the content inside them, not the container.
What It Means
Netflix without shows is a video player. YouTube without creators is a CDN. Wikipedia without articles is a wiki engine. The product is the pipe; the content is what people pay for.
Why It Matters
- Your defensibility sits in the content library or the supply pipeline, not the UI.
- Early growth depends on solving the cold-start problem: no content, no users, no content.
- Content licensing, creator economics, and curation become core product decisions.
How to Apply
- Invest in acquiring or producing content before polishing the container.
- Build creator tools if you depend on user-generated content.
- Measure engagement with content, not just sessions.
The Trap
Treating content acquisition as a marketing expense. It's the product.
