Clear Communication Is Hard Work
Leadership / Principles · Updated Apr 2026
Clarity doesn't come naturally. It requires effort.
The Reality
- Clear writing takes more time than vague writing.
- Simple explanations require deep understanding.
- Short messages take longer to compose than long ones.
"I didn't have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one." - Mark Twain
Why Leaders Must Invest in Clarity
- Ambiguous communication multiplies confusion across the team.
- One unclear message to 50 people wastes 50 people's time.
- Misunderstandings compound. Small gaps become big problems.
How to Improve
- Edit ruthlessly. Cut half of what you wrote. Then cut more.
- Use structure. Headings, bullets, numbered steps.
- Lead with the conclusion. Don't make people read 5 paragraphs to find the point.
- Test understanding. Ask someone to repeat what you said in their own words.
- Re-read before sending. Would this make sense to someone with no context?
