Universality
Systems / Concepts
Very different systems can obey the same underlying laws.
What It Means
Phase transitions in magnets, liquids, and neural networks follow the same mathematical pattern. Power laws appear in city sizes, earthquake magnitudes, word frequencies. Universality: the details of the system don't matter for certain large-scale behaviours.
Why It Matters
- Lessons transfer across domains that look unrelated.
- A model that works in physics may explain an economy.
- It tells you which details matter and which can be ignored.
How to Apply
- When stuck, look for analogous systems in other fields.
- Focus on the structural features (feedback, scale, connectivity), not the surface.
- Read widely — universality rewards breadth.
The Trap
Forcing analogies. Not everything is universal; some systems really are special. Check the analogy's limits before leaning on it.
