The World Is a Continuum
Systems / Principles
There are no separate systems. Every boundary we draw is a choice.
The Idea
"The economy," "the ecosystem," "the team" — these are useful fictions. In reality, each bleeds into everything else. The boundary you draw around a system is an analytical convenience, not a property of the world.
Why It Matters
- Treating systems as closed misses externalities.
- Problems "outside scope" often turn out to be causes.
- Solutions that ignore the continuum create knock-on damage elsewhere.
How to Apply
- State your system boundary explicitly. Know it's arbitrary.
- When surprised, widen the boundary — the cause may be outside.
- Track what crosses the boundary: inputs, outputs, side effects.
Examples
- Environmental impact of a business isn't outside its model — it's just not priced in.
- A team's morale depends on events outside the team.
- A codebase is embedded in developer tooling, org structure, and customer needs.
