Context Over Content
Systems / Dualities
In category theory, the relations between things matter more than the things themselves.
The Idea
Category theory studies objects by their morphisms — how they relate to other objects. What something IS matters less than how it connects. The same pattern appears across systems: the arrangement of parts determines behaviour more than the parts themselves.
The Two Sides
| Content | Context |
| What a thing is | How it relates |
| Intrinsic properties | Structural position |
| Measurable locally | Only visible globally |
Why It Matters
- Swap the part, system may still work. Swap the relations, it breaks.
- Troubleshooting by inspecting parts misses context-caused failures.
- Organisations are context more than content — the same people in different structures act differently.
How to Apply
- When diagnosing, map relations before examining components.
- Redesign by changing interfaces, not just implementations.
- Ask: what's this thing's position in the system?
