Data has two parts: what matters, and what distracts from what matters.
Signal is the pattern you're trying to detect. Noise is everything else. Real data always contains both. The hard part is telling them apart in real time, without the benefit of hindsight.
| Signal | Noise |
|---|---|
| Carries meaning | Carries nothing |
| Persistent | Random |
| Actionable | Misleading |
| Hard to find | Cheap to generate |
Seeking more data to reduce noise. More data often adds noise faster than signal. Filter, don't accumulate.
