The Tension

Roots are the invisible work — culture, habits, learning, relationships. Fruits are the visible outcomes — revenue, promotions, shipped products. Everyone wants fruit, but fruit comes from roots. Neglecting roots to chase fruits is borrowing from the future.

How to Navigate

• When results stall, check the roots before blaming the fruit.
• Invest in things that don't show up in quarterly reviews: learning, mentoring, building trust.
• Don't ignore fruit entirely — it validates that the roots are healthy.
• Beware of leaders who only talk about fruit. They often inherit someone else's roots and call it their own.

The Trap

Using "I'm focused on the long term" as an excuse for no results. Healthy roots produce visible fruit eventually. If nothing is growing, the roots might not be as strong as you think.
