Products Beyond Real World Objects
Product / Concepts
Digital products don't have to imitate physical things.
What It Means
Many early digital products copied physical metaphors: desktop, folder, trash can, page, book. Useful at first — but the real wins come when products invent interactions that only exist in software.
Why It Matters
- Physical metaphors carry limits that software doesn't need.
- Native digital primitives (search, undo, multiplayer, version history) have no physical analogue.
- The most valuable products often look nothing like their pre-digital ancestors.
Examples
- Google Docs: no "pages," real-time co-editing, version history.
- Figma: infinite canvas, components, shared cursors.
- Spotify: playlists and algorithmic radio instead of albums.
How to Apply
- Ask what the physical metaphor prevents you from doing.
- Prototype versions without any real-world analogue.
- Keep metaphors only when they genuinely aid understanding.
