Mirror Neuron System
Leadership / Concepts · Added Apr 2026
People mirror the behaviour they see, especially from leaders.
The Idea
Mirror neurons fire both when you perform an action and when you watch someone else perform it. Your brain rehearses what it observes. In teams, this means behaviour is contagious — calm leaders produce calm teams, anxious leaders produce anxious ones. You don't just set expectations by what you say; you set them by what you do.
Why It Matters
- A leader's mood and behaviour ripple through the team faster than any policy.
- Saying "take time off" while working weekends sends a contradictory signal — and the mirror wins.
- Modelling the behaviour you want is more effective than mandating it.
- This works in both directions: bad habits spread just as easily as good ones.
How to Apply
- Be deliberate about what you model. Your team copies your actions, not your words.
- If you want your team to ask questions, ask questions yourself. If you want candour, be candid first.
- Watch for behavioural patterns in your team — they often reflect your own.
- When onboarding someone, pair them with the person whose habits you want them to adopt.
The Trap
Believing that awareness of mirroring makes you immune to it. You mirror others too — your own behaviour is shaped by the people around you. Choose your models carefully.
