Profit vs Rent
Systems / Dualities
Profit is earned by creating value. Rent is extracted by holding a position.
The Distinction
- Profit — reward for building something useful that didn't exist.
- Rent — reward for sitting on a scarce resource others must access.
| Profit | Rent |
| Creates value | Extracts value |
| Productive | Positional |
| Competitive | Protected |
| Grows the pie | Takes a slice |
Why It Matters
- Systems dominated by rent stagnate. Systems dominated by profit grow.
- Rent-seeking looks like winning in the short term but rots incentives.
- Many "business models" are disguised rent collection.
Examples
- Patents for invention: profit. Patent trolls: rent.
- Platforms that enable: profit. Platforms that toll: rent.
- Land tax debates trace back to this distinction.
How to Apply
- Ask of any income stream: is this creating value or gatekeeping?
- Systems design should reward profit and friction rent.
- In your own career, build earning power, not just a protected seat.
