Pattern Languages
Product / Tools
Reusable design patterns with names, forms, and contexts where they fit.
The Idea
Christopher Alexander: good design reuses proven patterns. Each pattern names a problem, a context, and a form that solves it. Patterns combine into a language — a vocabulary for designing.
Why It Matters
- Naming common patterns speeds shared understanding.
- Patterns distil many people's experience into reusable forms.
- A language of patterns makes design teachable.
Examples in Software
- Design patterns (Observer, Factory).
- UI patterns (hamburger menu, pull-to-refresh, empty state).
- Service patterns (circuit breaker, retry with backoff).
How to Apply
- Name the patterns your team uses. Write one-page descriptions.
- Use pattern names in design reviews to speed decisions.
- Evolve patterns as you learn; don't treat them as fixed rules.
The Trap
Applying patterns by rote. A pattern only helps when the context fits. Copying the form without the context produces cargo-cult design.
