Hold Regular Retrospectives
Product / Advice
Learning happens when teams stop and reflect. Not by accident.
The Idea
At regular intervals, stop the work and ask: what went well, what didn't, what should we change? The practice sounds trivial and is skipped constantly.
Why It Matters
- Without retros, problems repeat.
- Teams that reflect improve. Teams that don't coast.
- Retros surface the small rocks before they become big ones.
How to Run One
- Short and regular beats long and rare. 45 minutes every two weeks.
- Stick to a format. Three columns, five-whys, start-stop-continue.
- Capture actions. Review them next time.
- Safety first — people won't speak honestly if there's blame in the air.
The Traps
- Blame sessions. Focus on systems, not people.
- No follow-through. If nothing changes, the retro dies.
- Too long, too rare, or dominated by one voice.
