Hierarchy Is Where the Top Serves the Bottom
Systems / Principles
Good hierarchies exist to serve the parts, not command them.
The Idea
Healthy hierarchies in nature and organisations work like this: the higher levels exist to provide conditions, resources, and coordination for the lower levels. The bottom does the real work; the top makes that work possible.
Why It Matters
- Hierarchies that serve top-down authority consume the system they're meant to enable.
- The value flows upward; the support flows downward.
- Flip this and the system rots.
How to Apply
- Leaders: ask "what do they need that only I can provide?"
- Remove obstacles for people closer to the work.
- Reward service, not dominance.
Examples
- Servant leadership in management.
- Subsidiarity in governance — do things at the lowest capable level.
- Platform teams serving product teams.
The Trap
Romanticising flatness. Hierarchies exist because coordination at scale requires them. The question isn't whether to have one — it's who serves whom.
