Entropy vs Energy
Systems / Dualities
Energy does the work. Entropy eats the order.
The Tension
Energy is the capacity to create change. Entropy is the tendency of systems to degrade toward disorder. Every system needs energy to maintain itself against entropy, which constantly pulls it apart.
| Energy | Entropy |
| Creates order | Dissolves order |
| Requires input | Arrives for free |
| Enables action | Degrades structure |
| Bounded resource | Unbounded tendency |
Why It Matters
- Any organised system (team, codebase, org chart) needs energy input to resist entropy.
- Stop maintaining and it decays — no active destruction needed.
- The question is never "how do we prevent decay?" but "where do we spend our energy budget?"
How to Apply
- Plan energy spend explicitly — on quality, alignment, documentation, relationships.
- Identify which parts of the system are decaying fastest and focus there.
- Accept that not all parts are worth maintaining.
