Balancing Engineering Values
Leadership / Advice
Engineering teams often hold values in tension. The leader's job is to balance them.
Common Tensions
- Speed vs Quality - Ship fast or ship right?
- Innovation vs Stability - Explore new tech or stick with proven tools?
- Autonomy vs Consistency - Let teams choose their own tools or standardise?
- Simplicity vs Capability - Build simple or build flexible?
The Rule
None of these is always right. The answer depends on context: stage of company, maturity of team, type of product.
How to Balance
- Make the current trade-off explicit: "Right now, we're prioritising speed over polish because..."
- Revisit regularly. What was right last quarter might be wrong now.
- Don't let one value permanently win. Teams that only value speed create debt. Teams that only value quality never ship.
The Leader's Role
You're the balancer. When the team swings too far toward one value, pull them toward the other. This feels contradictory but it's the job.
