Aim to Do Nothing by Yourself
Leadership / Advice
Your job as a leader is to make yourself unnecessary.
The Idea
If you're the one doing the work, you're not leading. Your goal should be to build a team and systems where everything can happen without you.
What This Looks Like
- Delegate tasks, not just execution but also decisions.
- When someone asks you to solve something, ask: "Who else could handle this?"
- Build processes that don't depend on your involvement.
- Coach others to do what you currently do.
Why It's Hard
- It feels good to be needed.
- Doing it yourself is faster (in the short term).
- Letting go means accepting imperfect results.
The Test
Can you take a two-week holiday and nothing breaks? If not, you've built a system that depends on you, and that's a problem.
